SUE BANTING - FINDING THE BEST OF THE BEST IN TECH By Sue Van Der Hout
She’s been a "Search Professional" for over two decades. Her focus is tech. She stumbled into it, built a clientele, got busy and has risen to the top of the tech finding heap in Canada. It’s a great big niche and an opportunity that’s getting bigger and better.
Sue didn’t study tech. At university she studied politics and economics. Like many people unsure about career direction, she thought about law. While considering her future, she took a job at a call center at Bell Canada.
For Sue, working at a call center was not a McJob. While she may not have realized it at the time, it created an unexpected opportunity. It taught her how to listen and how to serve people. From there she moved up into sales where she leveraged those listening skills. The beauty of the job, at least the way she did it, was that it allowed her to learn about all facets of the technology business. Best of all her new role taught her the fundamentals of relationship building.
From that platform, she grew her skills, her confidence, a magnetic presence and over time her personal brand.
Now a partner at Canada’s leader in executive search, Ray & Berndtson, she takes pride in building leadership teams. Her niche is the Information Technology function specializing in CRM, ERP, e-Business and the telecommunications industry.
Sue says that the key to her success is that she is passionate about her work. Sue excels because she loves what she does. Her focus is the human aspect: know the people, know your client’s business, and add value.
Sue feels that being female can be an asset. Women are tremendous relationship builders and inclined to be exceptional listeners. Her real skill is creating relationships that endure by adding value. Her clients want to work with her. Sue is proud to be more than a consultant to her clients – she is a trusted advisor.
